PPP219: The Creative Freedom of Constraint

I recently read a book called, “Draw to Win”. On page 142 of that book is this quote by Orson Welles, “The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.” I don’t know if I got anything else out of that book but this quote has stuck with me. So much so that I decided to devote an entire podcast episode to it.

Here are three thoughts I’d like to share with you about the creative freedom of constraint.

Use no more than three colors

One of the suggestions in the Draw to Win book was to use no more than three colors when you are creating.

At first, that might seem very limiting but I think that’s the point. You must learn to be creative within that limitation.

I love this idea for improvisation and creativity at the piano. If I tell a student they can play anything they want they are often stuck, not know how to start or what to do. If I give them some boundaries like my Get SMART guide, they become free to work within the guidelines.

I talked about Get SMART in more detail in PPP036 and PPP039.

Only Six Christmas Storage Boxes

I think the thing that makes Christmas decorations so special is that we only see them once a year. I have special memories of ornaments my children made or my students gave me. At the same time, there are so many cute NEW things I could buy and enjoy.

I made a rule a few years ago that I can only have six Christmas storage boxes. Now, if I want to buy something new, it has to fit in one of those boxes or I have to get rid of something I no longer want.

Just like I have limited room to store Christmas decorations, your piano kid has limited time in their schedule.

Guardrails are for Your Protection

You might enjoy this article from EHStoday.com

I took some excerpts and copied them for you here.

“Providing safety precautions in both fall protection and guardrails can help workers make sure they’re following all the proper procedures to avoid any potential accidents.

The key to providing a safe atmosphere within your building is to follow the standards set by both the International Code Council (ICC) and OSHA, whose standards crossover in fall protection and guardrail requirements.

That way, any individual – whether it be someone who is visiting or someone who is working inside a business-owned property – will be in a safe environment.

Thanks to the standards set by the IBC and OSHA, you’ll have a much better handle on the safety of your building and the people who work and travel inside it. Not only will you be in compliance, but your business also will be in a much better position for true success.”

Now, here is my rewrite of those excepts with your parenting guardrails in mind.

“Providing safety precautions in both BOUNDARIES AND LIMITATIONS can help PARENTS make sure they’re following all the proper procedures to HELP YOUR CHILDREN LEARN TO CREATE THEIR OWN BOUNDARIES.

The key to providing a safe atmosphere within your HOME/PARENTING is to follow the standards set by YOUR FAMILY VALUES AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, whose standards crossover in BOUNDARIES AND LIMITATIONS.

That way, any individual – whether it be a FAMILY OR A FRIEND who is visiting or YOUR OWN CHILD – will be in a safe environment.

Thanks to the standards YOU set, you’ll have a much better handle on the safety of your HOME and the people who LIVE inside it. Not only will you HAVE MORE PEACE, but your CHILD also will be in a much better position for true success.”

Conclusion: What’s the point of all this? I hope that it reminds you, if you are dealing with limitations this holiday season, to view those limitations with your creative parenting mind. Remind yourself that limitations can be not only tolerable but very healthy for your piano kid.
